In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Atwater was riding with Torres when they became involved in a car chase tonight. It started out as a routine traffic stop and the driver refused to pull over. The driver then led the cops on a chase that eventually kills himself. However, they understood his motives once they found the bricks of heroin in his car.
Their dead guy was probably transporting the stuff for either himself or someone else and he couldn’t risk being caught with that much drugs. That amount could get people killed if it goes missing. Or if it gets locked up into a police evidence locker. And so maybe that’s why the driver chose death before he could disappoint his employer.
It wasn’t long before they found out who he was working for. He was working for Rafael Perez. Perez was a big time drug dealer in the city. He ran a couple of blocks and he was pretty down low.
He doesn’t drive flashy cars. He lives in a modest house that was owned by a shell company in his wife’s name. He doesn’t have anything attached to him. He also didn’t have anyone willing to betray him. There’s been no one that’s wanted to flip on him. The cops tried because Perez was a suspect in a few homicides and still no one would talk.
The cops’ best bet was to get someone on the inside. This was where Torres came in handy. He’s done some undercover work before. He knows how to handle himself under pressure.
It also goes without saying that Torres has the right look for it. He grew up around drug dealers. He once was one of them and now he was a cop that could play a drug dealer when the mood arises. Like it did once they realized Perez needed a new drug runner. Torres pretended to know Trey. He claimed that ran together. And he pretended to be shocked by his death.
The cops built an undercover background to withstand anything. Torres also knows the area. He was able to catch things that the others missed and so that got him to a party.
It was a hidden party in what looked like an abandoned warehouse. Torres was taken to a room. He met a stripper that tried to have sex with him. It was a test you see. If he sleeps with the stripper but turns out to be a cop, he could get fired for it. Him not sleeping with the stripper would tip off the bad guys. And so he chose a different way out of it.
Torres refused to sleep with the woman. He said he doesn’t like sleeping with women who don’t want him. He played it off as him being a gentleman and so the stripper lied for him. She said they slept together. She would have gotten in trouble herself if they hadn’t. So she protected him and herself. Torres got an in. He was going to be working with Eric. He met Eric’s aunt. Her name is Gloria Perez. She was the big drug trafficker’s wife. Everyone believed her to be barely involved with the trafficking. And tonight proved differently.
Torres went with her as she shook down a guy for extra twenty grand. Torres thought that maybe she works for her husband and was more involved than they initially thought, but she went on to hide that money. She was skimming from her husband. Not working with him. She was getting older and her husband prides himself on being surrounded by beauty. He saw her having lunch once. He threw away the food. He said he doesn’t want her to get fat. He controls what she eats, what she wears, and where she lives.
Gloria knew that it was going to end one day. She didn’t pride herself on surviving once Perez was done with her. Which is why she’s stealing from him. Gloria has been stealing for a while. She was hoping to use the money to get away. Somewhere safe. Torres realized that and he knew he could flip her. He got her away from her car long enough for the cops to get to her stash. After that was done, Torres revealed he was a cop. He brought Gloria down to the station. He told her that she either chooses jail and gets killed or she works with them and buys her freedom from Perez.
Gloria chose working with the cops. Only she was also interested in the story that Torres was telling her to get her away from her car. Torres admitted that his mom was in a rough place and that he got her out. Gloria has seen plenty of cops. She knows that Torres wasn’t lying about that story. She kept asking what he did to help his mom get out. He wouldn’t answer her. He instead told her to focus on the case. Gloria went home that night. She made her husband dinner. She also tried to offer her assistance in the run tonight.
Perez smacked her up a bit. He thought it was odd that she was making him dinner out of the blue. He also agreed to let her come to the meet that night. Gloria was hoping to get him captured there and something went wrong. Perez never showed up at the meet. He let the drugs go out with word from Gloria. He didn’t call Gloria to tell her where he was. The cops were following when he just upped and disappeared on them. The cops had to let the drugs go through because they couldn’t risk Gloria’s cover.
Gloria was worried about Perez. Perez however had killed Eric. He cut out Eric’s tongue and that’s only done for snitching. Eric liked to talk when he was high at their secret club. Perez must have gotten worried that cops would be at the shipment. Hence he let Gloria go so that she could be arrested. And he could be free of her.
Gloria thought her husband was going to kill her if she went back to him and so she did something stupid. She slept with Torres. He was the only one that understood her desperation.
