In tonight’s Matlock episode, Joey Danza reached out to the Kingstons. Alfie contacted him online. He suspected that he might be his father and Joey didn’t know for sure. He was a junkie back then. He also wasn’t good with dates. He dated Ellie for two years. It was between 2008 and 2010. Ellie wasn’t pregnant until 2011.
Matty was hoping that Joey wasn’t the father. Neither she nor her husband wish to share their grandchild with anyone. Not when their only child was dead. Ellie wasn’t around to say who the father was. She took the truth with her to her death and the only thing they knew about the father was that he sent an email a day after Ellie’s funeral.
Alfie traced that email to a biker club. He contacted them. He got in touch with Joey. Which concerned Matty. She didn’t like her teenage grandson contacting strangers online. She was insisting on a DNA test before she allowed him to meet Alfie in person. She wasn’t going to trust in a lab official either.
She got hair straight from Joey’s head. She was going to test it independently. It was her one chance to make sure that Joey wasn’t hiding anything. This included a criminal record or a continued drug use. Matty wasn’t solely looking for evidence he was Alfie’s father.
Surprisingly, the person most supportive during this time was Olympia. Olympia hugged her. She checked in with her. She was being really nice to Matty over this potential custody issue and so it sucks that it comes on the back of betrayal. Olympia found the evidence against her ex-husband.
He did hide the Wellbrexa file. It could have taken opioids off the street years before it destroyed Ellie’s life. Along with many others. It was highly addictive and the pharmaceutical company knew it. They chose to focus on profit over people.
Senior asked Julian to bury this file. He did it to protect the company, but what’s the saying? The coverup was often worse than the crime. Julian could go to prison for what he did.
It could destroy Olympia because it would destroy her children and so she lied for Julian. She told Matty that the file wasn’t found. She claimed that he really did get money from his trust fund. She left out that she kept the file. She needed in case she was in need of leverage. Olympia lied to Matty about it and Matty suspected something was off. She was just too caught up in this Joey/Alfie thing.
Olympia lied. Julia wanted her to destroy the file. If she couldn’t do it, he asked her to look away while he did it and she chose neither. She instead wanted to help Matty find evidence against Senior. It was the only way to save Julian. They just needed to prove that Senior gave Julian the order.
The only thing they currently have was Julian’s word and Olympia didn’t bring that up to Matty. Matty was pushing to take their evidence to the New York Times. It was circumstantial right now. The journalists could probably find leads she didn’t and they hold the court of public opinion.
It could sometimes be enough to bring real charges. Edwin wanted to be done with everything. He was tired of the lies and living in New York. He wanted to return to their real lives.
He wanted to be a priority again with Matty. He feels like her quest for revenge was taking over everything. There’s probably a part of him that wonders if Alfie went looking for his dad because he was feeling neglected. Alfie has helped with the case. He sometimes helped a little too much. There should be boundaries. And they the grandparents were the first to cross them.
Joey has also become very insistent on wanting to see Alfie. He was calling Matty. He was stopping by the house without permission. Edwin suspected he was watching them. He feared that Joey would be an issue if they left with Alfie. Only Matty knows that Joey was important to Ellie. Joey knew the secret that Matty kept.
Matty told all her friends that her daughter got injured during a swim session and became addicted to opioids prescribed by a doctor. The truth is that Ellie just took some at a party. She took it, became addicted to it, and then did everything to chase the high.
Ellie overheard her mom telling that story to her friends. It made her realize how ashamed her mother was of her. Ellie was a champion swimmer and her mom came down on the only thing she was still proud during one of the worst moments of her life. Ellie lashed out at her mom. Until she found herself saying the same story to Joey.
The two of them were close. It doesn’t change the fact that the timelines don’t add up because they don’t. Joey might have dated Ellie and he might have been important to her. It doesn’t mean he’s a dad unless the DNA test results come back positive.
Billy might be a dad as well. Billy has been sleeping with his ex Claudia. She was pregnant and she didn’t know what to do. It made Billy freak out. Then they talked.
Claudia wanted to keep the baby and she and Billy decided to get back together. The whole team worked on a case together. It should have brought them together when instead Matty used it as an opportunity to betray Olympia again. She found out that Olympia put in a safe. She saw Olympia’s security key. She used the case as a distraction and she got the Wellbrexa file.
Matty was going to give it to the newspapers. She also learned that Joey was Alfie’s father and that he lied about being sober. He couldn’t fight them for custody no matter how much he tried. And he will try if it makes the wealthy Kingstons pay off his drug habit.
THE END!
