In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Dr. Daniel Charles collapsed at the hospital. He’s been under a lot of stress. Both his personal and work lives were taking hits.
It’s only natural that his health became affected. He collapsed on the floor of his office. It took others a minute to find him because they thought he had been angry from his conversation with Sharon.
Sharon was the hospital administrator. She received a complaint about Charles that she had to investigate. She gave him a minute to stew and, when he still wasn’t answering calls from the ED about a patient, she got worried. She finally went to his office where she found him.
Sharon suspected it was a stroke. The good doctor was still alive when she found him. He needed to be rushed into a CT before surgery could be put on the table.
Sharon had Drs. Archer and Ripley on the case. She waited to discuss the next part of the process with Anna. Poor Anna. Charles’s daughter was worried she caused her dad’s stroke.
They were arguing earlier about her new boyfriend. He was worried. She told him to butt out of her life. She didn’t actually mean it so Sharon was helping with her guilt.
It was later determined that Charles needed brain surgery. There was a safer option that could result in him living on a ventilation tube. Or they could risk surgery to restore full brain function.
Anna thought she should discuss what came next with her sister Robin. There was no need. Charles didn’t have his daughters as his medical power of attorney. He instead named Sharon to be his proxy. Charles knew what it was like to have a sick parent and he didn’t want to put that burden on his girls.
Dr. Charles’s father killed himself in the garage connected to the family home. He found the body. He created between him and his mother that never healed. She was gone now. Charles saw her in whatever dreamscape he was in.
They discussed his father. He accused her of cruelty. Only he came to see that he has a little of her in him after all. He went off on Sharon for following the rules. He knew who she was. He also knew that the complaint against him would be dismissed. And he still took it out on Sharon.
Sharon explained what happened to Anna in the awake world. Anna said it was okay. She knew that her dad channeled his own mother when he went off like he did and that he would be apologetic when he wakes up. It was never if he wakes up with Anna. She stayed positive. Sharon also didn’t agree to make a decision unless both Anna and Robin were in agreement.
The ladies decided together to go ahead with the brain surgery. Dr. Abrams was performing it as the drama in the ED began heating up.
Dr. Lenox brought in a substitute to fill in for Dr. Asher during her maternity leave. Asher wanted to wait to go on leave closer to her due date. Lenox had to remind her that the baby will come when it wants to.
Not when its best for mom. Lenox believed it’s better to be prepared so she brought in Dr. Lovell to fill in for Asher. Asher doesn’t like Lovell. She thought Lovell was unserious and perhaps even childish. Lovell felt Asher was dismissive of social media. Asher assumed a patient was getting medical advice from online so she dismissed it.
The patient ended up preferring Lovell over Asher. She asked Lovell to do her pelvic exam. Lovell was right in her diagnosis. She was also right in not discounting patients because social media has taught them to speak up for themselves.
Asher may be a great doctor, but not every gynecologist is. Asher was taking out the fact that she has to go on leave against Lovell. Lenox told her as much. Lovell also told her the same when she overheard Asher complaining about her and Lenox shutting it down.
Asher isn’t going away forever. She was having a baby and can come back from that. It was still was her own decision to have the child. It was her own decision to juggle baby on top of having a career. Maybe she shouldn’t freak out before the baby actually gets here. Dr. Charles in the meantime dreamed about his dad again.
This time he saves him and he realizes he couldn’t save everyone. He dreamed of Ripley. He dreamed of his children. They all saved him in the end because he had the chance to die only he refused to take it.
Dr. Charles later woke up after brain surgery with Sharon at his bedside. He knew where he was and he asked why he didn’t get any Jello. Dr. Lenox also tried to be there for Ripley.
She normally doesn’t do death and that’s where they thought Charles was heading. And so Lenox still tried to get over her hangups to be supportive for Ripley.
THE END!
