Most celebrity parents that we know don’t even reveal their children’s names, much less discuss them in the media spotlight. After all, by revealing their names and opening up about them once, you are indirectly giving permission to the media and the tabloids to start writing about them. Look at Cate Blanchett and James McAvoy – despite the high profile of their careers, we don’t hear a peep about their children. It’s the same with Matt Damon. And then of course, we have the opposite end of the spectrum with movie stars like Ben Affleck. And when we go a few steps further, and we have Kate Gosselin and her children.
With Kate, it’s a situation of choosing media exposure over being irrelevant. Her children were the only reason she ever came into the public spotlight, and you can bet that she knows it. She constantly utilizes her children to keep herself relevant, and she often tweets about them and their daily activities. On the one hand, you could say she’s just being a proud mom, and many moms overshare about their kids on social media.
However, it’s a different story with Kate because it’s so obviously calculated. She’s very careful about when and what she tweets about her children, and since the failure of her book, we’ve been getting increasingly personal quotes and tweets. A couple of days ago, she tweeted, “WINDY am, Me:Woah, look at branches on the road! Alexis, worried:Branches fell? Hannah, patting Alexis on leg:Don’t worry,Lex,they’ll grow back!”
Do we really need to know what Alexis and Hannah felt about the branches on the road? Did we need to know that this particular incident happened at all? And by ‘we’, I mean her followers on Twitter, most of whom only follow her because they were fans of Jon and Kate Plus 8.
Do you guys think Kate should stop tweeting about her kids? The public doesn’t need to know about them, but maybe her fans like hearing about them? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
