LeAnn Rimes used to be one of the biggest country music stars in the world, and then Eddie Cibrian and The X-Factor USA’s finale happened. During an exclusive interview with Entertainment Online’s Nancy O’ Dell, Rimes opened up about her affair with Cibrian, her upcoming album, Spitfire, and how her infidelity created not just music and speculation, but also created a storm of controversy during one of the most trying times of her life.
In Rimes’ words, “What Have I Done is one of the first songs that I wrote for the record, before anything was actually starting to happen. It was written about a friend of mine, but I didn’t realize I was writing it for myself at the time… It was my subconscious talking and I didn’t know yet.” The song was written about a friend of Rimes when she was still married to her ex-husband, Dean Sheremet. She was having “feelings” for Cibrian during this time, but kept it to herself. Once Sheremet heard the track, Rimes knew then and there that he was suspicious. She says, “He actually heard the song when I wrote it and, actually, he knew what it was about before I did. He knew I was feeling feelings. I’m not sure what those were that he knew. It’s a very complicated situation.”
The age old adage – Once a cheater, always a cheater – jumps into Rimes’ mind every now and then when it comes to Cibrian. Asked whether she thinks Cibrian might cheat on her one day, she says, “I would be ignorant to say, and everyone else would think I am a liar if I didn’t say yes, and I have at times. Speaking for him, I would actually say that’s creeped into his [mind]…I think we’ve been very honest and open with that to each other and our conversations about it have only made me understand how much he actually cares, as much as I do, about being faithful to each other.”
Some might see their relationship – having been built on infidelity and adultery – as a failure and as a scam, but Rimes and Cibrian are still going strong, however dysfunctional their present might be.
