Modern Family RECAP 2/5/14: Season 5 Episode 14 “iSpy”

Tonight is ABC’s hit show Modern Family  continues with another new episode called “iSpy.”  On tonight’s show privacy is a thing of the past.  Did you watch the last episode?  We did and we recapped it right here for you.

On last week’s episode the high school open house put the parents in a bit of a time warp when Claire found herself stressed out by all the pressure, Gloria encountered a “mean girl” mom (guest starred Jane Krakowski) and Jay taught Phil how to play a little hookie. Elsewhere, Mitchell got defensive when he encountered his judgmental, environmentalist neighbor (guest star Jesse Eisenberg) and Alexwent to see a therapist (guest star John Benjamin Hickey).

Claire and Phil decide to spy on Luke and Manny as they’re hanging out with one of their more questionable friends. Meanwhile, Gloria is furious with Jay because she thinks he had a dream about another woman, but Jay misinterprets her anger for another offense he committed. And, Cam secretly uses Mitch as a scapegoat to get out of attending a party, while Haley tries to keep her photography exhibit a secret from her family.

We will be live blogging tonight’s episode with all the up-to-the-minute details.   So come back at 9PM EST and spend the evening with us.  Make sure to refresh often to get the latest updates!

What happens to a secret in the Dunphy’s household? Well, it eventually has run by Claire. Claire noticed that her kids were trying to hide something from her. Her eldest Hailey managed to escape family VHS night by claiming she had plans. But she never let anyone in on what exactly she was doing that constituted as plans and Claire needed to know. When she doesn’t know what her kids are up to then she begins imagining worst so she sent in Alex as her spy.

With Alex busy figuring out Hailey’s secret, it was up to her and Phil to investigate their son, Luke. He and Manny went to visit their friend’s place. However Claire believes Zander to be nothing more than a bad influence on her son. The more she thinks about Luke and Manny with him is the more she gets nervous. Phil thinks she’s overreacting and was hoping by now she would stop going through this amount of crazy every time her kids appeared even the slightest bit cagey to her. But no, her job, hasn’t stopped this nagging part of her personality.

Speaking of which, Cam has always had a problem keeping secrets. He is truly is a gossip and that’s why when a friend of his and Mitch wanted to share something he chose to go to Mitch. Which is odd when you think about it because Mitch is really judgmental (like Claire). And still the friend chose him over Cam.  Why? It seems their mutual friend, Brett, didn’t want to advertise about his plastic surgery – he gotcalf implants and they look ridiculous. Mitch already had a few things to say when Brett assured him that his legs were swollen. That’s why it looks like he’s walking on Popeye’s arms.

Brett’s whole plan is to pretend he exercised when people begin to ask him about it. Yet the secret was too good to keep and Mitch was never good at keeping secrets from Cam. The moment he got home it was like he sent out sonar. Mitch tried distracting Cam with a new toy but that only works on Lily. So he caved and boy did he come to regret that.

So much for a secret, all of their friends knew about it before the day was out. It looks like Cam might have used up of all his minutes just to crack jokes about calf implantation. Another person caught with their phone was Jay. Gloria has been upset with him all day. She overheard him talking in his sleep and thinks he was having a sex dream about someone else seeing as he never calls her baby. Meanwhile Jay thinks Gloria is upset after looking at his phone. He has perfectly innocent text message with another woman and he figured Gloria might have taken it the wrong way.

Just to play it safe though he asked Alex how to delete them. Too little too late. Gloria was made about the dream but after Jay let it slip about the texts she demanded to see his phone.

Everyone wants to check phones now. Claire found out that Luke left Zander’s to go to Sammy’s. That is what he claimed although the locater they used to track him has him at another location. Claire and Phil don’t know the place and probably wouldn’t even think twice about if it weren’t for Hailey. Hailey told them that he was at a warehouse where kids generally went to go and get high. Take that in with a couple of facts about Zander – like he has older brother who according to Alex is also notorious pot head – and none of this looks good for Luke.

Claire and Phil travel all the way to the warehouse and what do they find? Their kid isn’t doing drugs. He’s just making a zombie movie with his friends. Phil had to deploy his drone for nothing and the parents were forced to fleeing the scene after the kids notice they were being watched. Luke only realized it was his parents with the drone once he crossed off Spielberg as a possible suspect.

Alex did find out Hailey’s secret. Her sister was one of the lucky few to get her pictures chosen to be in a showcase. Claire was so relieved and proud that she invited her whole family to go. Hailey was a little embarrassed when they showed up. Though she’ll never admit it, she didn’t tell them because she was nervous about her first show. Also her family was used as part of her project. She took still photos of them in unguarded moments.

There was one photo of Gloria and Claire (with everyone only seeing Gloria) that managed to sell. It was the first artwork of the night that did that. Afterwards Hailey was glad that her family was there to share in her triumph. Sure they may be crazy (and like usual they did make a scene when everyone began confiscating cell phones to see who was doing what) but they loved her enough to come.

Jay ended up getting off easy with Gloria. The test was harmless and his “sex” was him crying out in fear. He told her how he had a nightmare about Joe. In truth, it was about their dog but he’s not going to tell her that!

As for Claire, she really needs to give her kids more credit. She was expecting the worst from them and they were all being mostly tame. Even Alex’s secret wasn’t so bad. She was helping her uncle buy Claire a birthday gift.

THE END!
