Benedict Cumberbatch and pregnant Sophie Hunter are expecting their first child together, less than two months after the couple got engaged. In fact, I’d wager a bet saying that Sophie Hunter being pregnant is probably one of the reasons that they got engaged in the first place, not to mention the fact that it will vastly help Benedict Cumberbatch’s Oscar campaign for Best Actor. Looks like a shotgun wedding!
The couple first met on the set of Burlesque Fairytales in 2009, but they reportedly didn’t start dating until much later. While the exact timeline of their relationship isn’t clear, Benedict and Sophie announced their engagement via The Times of London in early November. Of course, the timing also can’t be a coincidence, because this is the first real shot that Benedict Cumberbatch has for an Oscar nomination and possibly even an Oscar win.
Sources tell the New York Post that Sophie is a ‘few months along’ in her first pregnancy, and that she and Benedict are reportedly planning to get married in the Spring. Hmm… honestly, with an engagement and pregnancy, they might as well get married now and carry that momentum into Oscar season. I mean, getting married and having a baby has worked numerous times for actresses in the past, but we’ve rarely seen an actor attempt the baby-to-Oscar campaign. Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway, sure, but Benedict Cumberbatch? Then again, Benny is already a tabloid darling, and women all over the world are obsessed with him thanks to his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Sure, they’re probably devastated that he’s engaged and is now having a baby with Sophie Hunter, but they’re not Oscar voters. Oscar voters love seeing prospective nominees/winners get married and have children, and the publicity that Sophie’s pregnancy will create is second to none. The fact that they are announcing the engagement now, just days away from Oscar nominations, is not a coincidence. In fact, it’s probably going to be a major factor in Benedict’s ongoing awards season campaign.
