Kate Middleton Can Give Birth To The Next Queen of England: Baby Girl Fourth In Line To The Throne - Succession Act Passed

Kate Middleton could give birth in a few weeks to the next Queen of England! The Succession to the Crown act has come into full force on March 26th, which basically put an end to females getting bypassed for their younger brothers across the Commonwealth of Nations. In other words, this new law means that Kate Middleton’s second royal baby [which we all know is a girl] will be fourth in line to the throne after Prince George even if the child is female – regardless of whether she has any younger brothers or not.

The Succession to the Crown act’s main changes will eliminate gender discrimination when dealing with succession, i.e. it will no longer be based on gender. The other changes are that a ‘person married to a Roman Catholic can accede to the throne’, and ‘only the first six in line to the throne must seek the Sovereign’s permission to marry’. Before this, it was that ALL members of the royal family needed to get permission from Queen Elizabeth before getting married.

In other words, this probably won’t make much difference for the next royal baby. Sure, if Prince George had been a girl, it would have been a huge deal – and it would have been the first the law had changed in 300 years. However, the next royal baby will have all the pressures of being an heir, the same as Prince Harry and her father, Prince William. But there certainly have been cases where the heir to the throne doesn’t make it. In fact Queen Elizabeth and her father King George VI only ascended the throne because her uncle Edward VIII abdicated to marry a divorcee. Anything can happen and Prince George is in no way a certainty to succeed his father as King.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called this a historic moment, stating, “I am proud the British Parliament has taken this step to end centuries of religious and gender discrimination. The government will soon introduce the Succession to the Crown Bill, which will make our old-fashioned rules fit for the 21st century.”

You know, Queen Elizabeth has ruled for so long that I don’t even think that people realize that the law still enforced gender discrimination. Under the old rules, the new royal baby girl might have been skipped over if she had a younger brother, but now, Kate Middleton’s new daughter gets to hold the very special honor of being fourth in line to the throne.
