“Downton Abbey” season 6 episode 5 spoilers for Sunday, January 31 tease that Bertie Pelham’s [Harry Haddon-Paton] interest in Lady Edith Crawley [Laura Carmichael] is growing – and possibly heading towards romance. Also, Lady Mary Crawley [Michelle Dockery] shuns new suitor Henry Talbot [Matthew Goode] and Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham [Huge Bonneville], will find himself fighting for his life.
Edith’s friendship with Bertie, the agent of Brancaster Castle, is slowly turning into a courtship. While at Downton Abbey, Edith receives an invitation to meet Bertie for drinks the next time the magazine owner is in London. Edith and Bertie share a passionate kiss in her London flat and Bertie makes his intentions clear.
Poor Carson is having trouble adjusting to married life. Lord Grantham’s trusted butler expects Elsie to prepare a proper dinner after a long day’s work at Downton. It’s been years since Mrs. Hughes has cooked, but Mrs. Patmore [Lesley Nicol] is happy to help out a bit. However, the dinner isn’t quite good enough for a critical Carson.
Lady Mary is resisting the charms of Henry Talbot. The aristocratic widow believes it would be a scandal if she were to marry below her station. If Mary cannot be happy, why should Edith? Mary won’t stop meddling in Edith’s life and questions Anna Bates [Joanne Froggatt] about Miss Marigold.
Lord and Lady Grantham entertain Neville Chamberlain, Minister of Health [Rupert Frazer], with a grand dinner party. Unfortunately, a shocking health crisis will present itself during the party that will put Robert’s life in jeopardy.
The Crawley family will be rocked to its core as Robert fights for his life. “If this is it, just know that I have loved you very, very much,” Robert confesses to Cora [Elizabeth McGovern] as he lay on the floor in the dining room awaiting the ambulance’s arrival.
Will Lord Grantham survive and return as the master of Downton Abbey? Can Lady Mary Crawley let down the wall she hides behind and love with Henry Talbot? Does Mary know Lady Edith Crawley’s secret regarding Marigold? Will Edith finally find love with Bertie Pelham or will Mary destroy everything Edith holds dear?
