The Vampire Diaries (TVD) begins tonight with Bonnie (Kat Graham) calling Caroline (Candice King), asking her to meet her for advice about Enzo (Michael Malarkey); when Caroline refuses Bonnie barges into her house asking her how she likes her eggs. Bonnie finds Damon (Ian Somberhalder) sitting in Caroline’s living room in a catatonic state.

Violet (Sammi Hanratty) is furious with Stefan (Paul Wesley) for turning her into a vampire. She is apologizing to the humans she had killed while drinking their blood. Stefan tells her she is the perfect sacrifice for Cade (Wole Parks) because she chose to feed on humans rather than die.

Bonnie and Caroline think Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) is the reason Damon is in this state; Caroline holds hands with Bonnie and they touch Damon only to see a vision of fire and pain. Damon sheds a tear and Bonnie believes he is suffering. Caroline can hear Sybil humming and find her chained in the cellar.

She lets them know she flipped Damon’s humanity switch and he is a zombie because it was too much to handle all at once. She promises to fix him if she gets what she wants, when they refuse Sybil acts like they don’t have a choice. She taunts Caroline about the uncertainty of her future with Stefan.

Matt (Zach Roerig) arrives on the scene of Violet’s dead body. He is distracted by a call from Caroline who tells him she needs the bell for Sybil. Matt refuses saying Damon deserves to be trapped in his mind suffering. Caroline is shocked to learn Violet is dead, but Matt doesn’t want to hear her apologies because it seems all she ever worries about are Stefan and Damon.

Sybil tries to bring Damon out of the state he is in but can’t; she tells them his conscience is in hell because he feels he belongs there. Sybil tells Caroline and Bonnie to go into the backdoor of Damon’s mind and figure out how to get him back.

Caroline and Bonnie arrive at the Salvatore House but when they enter, Henry (Evan Gamble) will not give them any information, especially when they reveal that Damon told them how he saved his life during the civil war. Henry orders them to leave, and all three of them are thrown out of Damon’s mind.

Stefan comes home offering to help them get Damon back; Caroline is not happy to see him. He says he made a mistake and is there to convince her to marry him, he says he is joking and he is there to get Damon back to work because he is not earning enough sacrifices for Cade without him.

Stefan informs them that when Damon was younger and did things he didn’t want to face he would hide until Stefan found him and told him it would be okay and now its the same thing. They need to get in his mind and reassure him things will be fine. Sybil reveals that she is only helping because she wants the Maxwell Bell before her sister, Seline (Kristen Gutoskie) uses it against her.

Bonnie and Caroline figure out they need to follow the clues he has left for them. They run into Vickie Donovan (Kayla Ewell) who has the bite mark where Damon bit her years earlier.

Meanwhile, Matt brings his father Peter (Joel Gretsch) back to town when he sees Vickie’s grave. He tells his father that the bell can either save or make the man who killed her suffer; his father says let him suffer.

As Caroline and Bonnie are about to chase after Vickie, Caroline sees her mother, Liz (Marguerite MacIntyre) sitting in the bar. Bonnie encourages Caroline to go speak to her mother while she searches for Vickie. Caroline knows she isn’t real but still has some words to share with her mom.

Bonnie finds Vickie, who removes the bandage on her neck to reveal a hickey, she has no clue who Damon Salvatore is. Caroline hugs her mother tight and asks if they can team up to find Damon but Liz spills water on her believing Caroline is the vampire she is looking for. Liz warns Bonnie to stay out of it.

Matt brings Seline back to town, asking her how the bell works to destroy Sybil. She says the bell needs to ring 12 times to kill Sybil, and since it was his bloodline that forged the bell, it is his bloodline that must ring it.

Stefan sneaks up on them, telling them they should be more quiet if they are planning a murder. He explains that he needs the bell because Cade needs more souls and Sybil is better at making deals than she is. Seline bets she can offer something better than her sister.

Sybil is back at the Salvatore house humming, when she opens her eye, Caroline is bleeding from her nose. Her mother has her strapped to a chair as she burns her in the sunlight. Liz believes that Stefan doesn’t have a brother; Damon Salvatore died years ago. Caroline informs Liz that she got sick and died and it was Damon who stayed by her side to the very end.

When asked why she is enduring all this pain for such a bad person, Caroline shares that Damon was the only one who understood how much it hurt to lose her, and that was the reason she forgave Damon for everything else. Liz vanishes from Caroline’s mind, but Bonnie is still in Damon’s mind. Sybil tells her that the key to getting Damon back is forgiveness but its not Caroline’s and they hope Bonnie does better.

Bonnie comes to her childhood home and her Grams (Jasmine Guy) is at the door. She asks her Grams to do a locator spell. She refuses when she learns it is to help a Salvatore vampire. Bonnie shares that she is happy and in love with a vampire; Grams is willing to do anything for her happiness.

Damon wants Bonnie to find her, and the letter he wrote her is in the drawer. Bonnie says if he wants her to know what the letter says, he will have to read it to her himself. Back at the bell tower, Seline explains that the bell will kill the siren with Hell fire. When the door between this world and Cade’s is open, it doesn’t just wipe out any siren, it wipes out everything for miles.

Matt says that is everyone in Mystic Falls. Seline asks Stefan if the entire town of miserable souls is enough for him to betray her sister?

Sybil taunts Caroline about not having enough confidence in Bonnie. Caroline reaffirms her faith in Bonnie but Sybil tells Caroline that Bonnie is planning on giving Enzo the cure for Vampirism.. Caroline tries to brush it off asking if those are Bonnie’s feelings or hers? Sybil says it doesn’t matter if she really had to ask.

Bonnie runs into Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) inside Damon’s crypt, who tells her to leave before he makes her go. Stefan and Matt are arguing about destroying Mystic Falls. Matt refuses to ring the bell and Stefan tells him he will and when he is done, he gets to mark his good soul for Cade.

Matt says the only way he will do it is if Stefan compels him and then it won’t be done by his own freewill. Stefan compels him saying if he doesn’t want to ring that bell he is going to have to forgive Damon for killing his sister, Vickie and if he can’t he needs to ring the bell 12 times before the top of the hour. Stefan leaves.

Bonnie tells Tyler he cannot make her leave because Damon wants her to save him. She expresses her faith in Damon and comes back to tell Caroline they need to get Stefan back there because in Damon’s mind he believes he lived and died a human and never became a vampire. It was the only way Damon was able to keep the people he loved safe; so he needs to speak to Stefan.

Stefan returns home, telling everyone to stop talking. Sybil asks if he had any luck with the bell and he says it is a work in progress. Stefan enters Damon’s mind with Sybil’s help. He jokes and tells Damon he forgives him for whatever is holding him back. He tells him to show up and come back to work.

Damon appears and Stefan tells him he forgives him. Damon tells him he has it backwards, Bonnie already helped him through his issues. Stefan asks him to enlighten him; Damon informs him that Stefan is there for Damon’s forgiveness.

Peter asks Matt if he is able to forgive Damon, and he says he can’t in the next 10 minutes. Matt tells his dad to get out of there and save as many people as he can. Peter doesn’t want to abandon his son again. Matt pushes him away, Peter says the only way Matt is going to ring the bell is to go through him. Matt begs his father to kill him because he is compelled and will keep coming. Matt begins to beat up his father, wanting to die a hero.

Damon forgives Stefan again, but Stefan punches him saying he has nothing to apologize for. Damon asks him why he is always there then? Damon says he always comes back because he blames himself for turning Damon in the first place and until today Damon blamed him for it too.

Stefan continues to beat Damon, but when he doesn’t heal from the wounds, Stefan is shocked to learn HE is the vampire running around in Damon’s head. Damon absolves him of all the things he had done to him. Damon loves him and nothing he can do will change that. Stefan challenges that by telling him he is about to burn all of Mystic Falls. Stefan suggests the best thing he can do is let Damon die with the rest of the town.

As the bell is rung the first time, Stefan surprises the women with his plan with Seline. Damon jumps up and stabs Stefan through the chest with his arm, saying he is unwilling to let him destroy their hometown.

Matt struggles within himself, begging his dad to stop him from ringing the bell. He begs Peter to kill him. Peter grabs him in a chokehold and as Matt says he forgives him, Damon arrives and knocks Matt out. Damon tells him he sent his dad and the bell out of town. Matt says he can’t thank him for something is his fault and walks away.

Damon calls Matt back and apologizes about Vickie, he doesn’t expect his forgiveness but should have told him a long time ago. Matt acknowledges that Damon’s humanity is back on, but what he did is a good thing in his books and if he continues down this path its a good start. Matt tells him he is going to the police department because Mystic Falls needs a Sheriff. Damon says he always did like the Sheriffs in this town, they exchange smiles.

Stefan is chained in the cell at Salvatore’s house. Caroline reveals she loves the real Stefan and if Damon is the answer to getting his humanity back she will do whatever it takes to get it back. She admits they will either make their relationship work or they won’t but either way she is getting him back. She locks the cellar and leaves.

Damon comes to see Bonnie, who is very happy to see him. She tells him what he did under Sybil’s control is not his fault. Damon sits beside her and recites the letter he wrote her, admitting she will be the one who will make him the best man he can be just like Elena and he is terrified of failing them both. He tells Bonnie she is an amazing woman and his best friend and he couldn’t handle letting her down over and over again.

Bonnie cries, telling him it is one hell of a letter. He apologizes for leaving her and it won’t happen again. She nods and hugs him tightly. Sybil and Seline meet up, neither one of them can apologize for what they have done to each other. Cade arrives announcing that the bell rang 11 times, enough for him to pay them a visit. Both sisters burst into flames when he says he can handle it from here.
