General Hospital (GH) spoilers tease that Chloe Lanier (Nelle Benson) is gearing up for this year’s Daytime Emmys, and she certainly has a good shot at becoming a repeat winner. She took home the statuette for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series in 2018, so she’s undoubtedly hoping to do it once more. Lanier had some truly stellar work, especially during her explosive exit story.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences isn’t releasing 2019 Daytime Emmy reels to the public, which is disappointing and rather shady if you ask us. They claim it’s in the interest of fairness and confidentiality, but viewers watched all these scenes when they aired. Everything’s technically been made public already, so why can’t fans see which specific scenes were chosen and how they were put together?
When you combine this with several glaring and puzzling omissions in the nominations, it’s quite shady indeed! The Daytime Emmys seem to be a real mess this year, but at least we know what Lanier submitted. In an interview with ABC Soaps in Depth, Lanier revealed what her reel looked like and why she made some of the choices she made.
First, Lanier included a brief General Hospital scene between Nelle and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright). It was when Nelle admitted to gaslighting Carly, so this reel starts off strong. Lanier went with a scene between Nelle and Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) next. It was when Nelle tried to convince Chase to kill Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) for her.
Lanier kept the drama going with a Nelle and Ava Jerome (Maura West) scene – “because a reel is not complete without Maura West,” the Daytime Emmy contender said. She followed that with the scene where Nelle handed her baby over to Brad Cooper (Parry Shen), which was a great inclusion. The baby switch brought some powerful moments that’ll really boost Lanier’s chances.
Finally, Lanier chose a scene between Nelle and Michael at GH. It was when Nelle tried to win Michael over after all the horrible things she’d done. Lanier seems to be relying on the same strategy she used last year. She’s highlighting her range and showing some variety in her work. That tactic definitely worked for Lanier in 2018, so maybe it’ll prove beneficial this year, too.
Regardless, Lanier’s looking forward to the upcoming ceremony. “I’m going to be there and my boyfriend’s going to come with me, so it should be a fun night,” Lanier said. “I’m more excited to see everyone from GH that I don’t get to see as much anymore.”
Many GH fans are undoubtedly hoping Lanier will pull off another victory, but we’ll see how it goes! As for what’s ahead in Port Charles, General Hospital spoilers say Nelle will have to get back in all the chaos eventually. There’s no way the show can leave her out of the baby reveal that’s brewing.
