In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Upton was contacted by one of Halstead’s criminal informants. Halstead was out of the country. Before he left, he gave his informants Upton’s number. He told them that she was a cop they could trust. She would help them if they were ever trouble and one of them was in trouble.
He called Upton. He asked to meet. His name is Lee. Lee was in trouble with some gangsters after stealing fifty grand from them. He needed help and unfortunately all he did was bring trouble to Upton’s door. You see he was followed to the meeting place.
The people he stole from had followed him. They saw him meeting up with Upton. They then grabbed Lee and they took Upton hostage as well. They were stun-gunned. Taken to a house they didn’t know. Upton had escaped once and tried to fight off the captors, but they pulled a gun on her. She couldn’t fight bullets.
She had to let them beat her up. She was then tied up next to Lee and the bad guys wanted to know who she was. She pretended to be Lee’s cousin. She said they were meeting up in alley to get drunk.
Upton knew better than to tell these people she was a cop. They would have probably killed her the first chance they got rather than risk releasing her in return for their stolen money.
That’s all they wanted by the way. They just wanted the money back. They threatened to kill Upton and Lee if they didn’t get that money. Upton asked him why he took the money. She thought he was clean because that’s what Halstead told her. Lee even assured her that he was still clean. He took the money for another reason.
A reason he didn’t want to talk about. He said he couldn’t get the money back. He revealed to Upton that he stole it for someone else and this other person was so important to him that he was willing to risk death for the both of them. Lee wasn’t going to talk. The bad guys didn’t like him not talking.
Lee wouldn’t tell them or Upton. Upton tried to lie by saying she could get the money with one phone call and instead they didn’t believe her because they’ve been paying attention to her conversation. They knew that Lee hadn’t told anyone about where the money went.
They cut off Lee’s hand to try to get him to talk. Lee still refused to say where the money was. He didn’t even care about the loss of his hand because he loved the person he gave the money to. He revealed to Upton that he gave the money to an ex-girlfriend. His ex helped him get clean. She was the light of his life until she left him because she didn’t think he could give her the life she deserves. He then stole the money in hopes of getting her back. She did come back for the money. And then she spent it all before leaving him again.
His ex was just money hungry. She got with him because she thought he was a gangster that could pay for everything. He goes and disappoints by distancing himself from his former friends. He got clean, but it came at a cost. One she wasn’t prepared to pay because she got used to a certain lifestyle. Upton tried to use that information to convince the bad guys to let Lee take them to the hide out to get the money back. They didn’t buy it and they were going to cut off her hand until Lee tried to fight off the one of the guys to protect her.
Lee ended up getting shot in the fight for the gun. He whispered with his final breath that his ex has spent all of the money. He died without ever revealing the ex’s name because till his death he was still trying to protect her and so Upton chose to lie to protect herself. She told the bad guys that she knew who has the money. She said that Lee gave it to his girl. She also pretended she knew where this woman lives. They threatened to beat the information of Upton only she reminded them that hasn’t worked out for them so far.
Upton told them that she would bring them to the girlfriend’s place. She also negotiated that she be let go after that and so Upton didn’t know that her unit was looking for her. She was supposed to meet up with Torres at their gym the night she was taken. Torres got worried when she didn’t show or call. He alerted Voight. They then began looking for Upton. They found security footage from a bodega across the street that proved she had been abducted. They saw that she was meeting with Lee. They then had Lee’s girlfriend come down to the station.
The girlfriend pretended to have no knowledge of any trouble Lee was in. She said they broke up a while ago. They had to find out on their own that not only did she recently blow through fifty grand, but she also was the one that set up the robbery. The people that took Upton were Mark and Eli. Mark was a drug dealer. Eli was one of his stooges. Mark went to a strip club where he bragged about having all of his money. The stripper he drunkenly told this had happened to be Lee’s ex. She told Lee about the stash. And Lee robbed it for her.
She never wanted Lee back. She just wanted the money. She set this all in motion. Voight found out she was lying about the money and so he pressured her into revealing who she stole it from. She told him about Mark. They then checked Mark’s properties. They found Lee’s body at one of them. Upton wrote next to the body the words “home”. She was trying to trick them into going to her house and instead they were driving her elsewhere when Upton saved herself. They threw Upton into the trunk of the car. She navigated a way out of him. And forced them into crashing the car.
Eli died instantly. Mark survived long enough to try and strangle Upton with his bare hands, but she stabbed him in the neck with a rock she saw on the ground.
Upton saved herself and the ex-girlfriend was now facing charges for what she set in motion.
Halstead never even knew that Upton had been kidnapped and Voight told her its okay to let go.
