In tonight’s The Rookie episode, Officer Miles Penn realized something about himself. He realizes he wasn’t being the man his mother raised. He should’ve been the bigger person with Seth Ridley and now he wants to make amends. He visited him. Seth wasn’t doing too great. He was missing physical therapy sessions.
His home was a mess. He was depressed and drinking. Never a good combo. Miles was reaching out to him as a case practically fell into Nolan’s lap. Nolan arrested a homeless man who identified himself as Erza Kane. This might not be his real name because he didn’t have ID. He was homeless and was arrested for breaking into a rec center supposedly to sleep for the night.
Nolan was empathetic. He arrested him because that’s his job, but he also got food for the guy. He felt bad for him. Nolan being that way helped build a bond and the detectives needed him to manipulate it.
They found out that Kane’s fingerprint was a match for one found at the crime scene of a triple homicide. A husband and a wife were killed. Their fifteen year old daughter was missing. They found her body clothes in a park and there was a fingerprint her kidnapper left behind. That’s where the match came from.
It was believed that Samantha was killed. Only that belief had been wrong. Kane kept and held onto Samantha. He broke her down to such an extent that she didn’t believe she was safe even when the cops found her in the motel room. Samantha was alive and she was broken. Kane had been gone for hours.
She had plenty of time to escape. She never took it. She refused to believe the cops when they said they had Kane. They reassured her that Kane was going away for a long time and she didn’t believe it. She also didn’t know that her parents were dead.
Samantha was finally taken to a hospital. She’s been isolated so long that she asked for them to call her parents. She wanted her parents to know that she was alright.
The cops had no idea how to break the news to her. Lucy eventually eased into as much as she could. Not that Samantha believed her at first.
Kane has been using the threat of hurting her parents to keep her in line. He wanted Samantha to call him Aamon. He claimed to be the seventh spirit and the marquis of hell. He even claimed he can commands forty legions that included the police.
Knowing that he killed her parents was what got Samantha talking. She told Lucy everything she knew. The last thing he said to her was that he was getting ready. She thought ready after he kills her and she was relieved that her pain was coming to an end. The cops suspected something different.
Kane or Aamon or whatever his name was had caught onto Nolan’s routine. He asked for the real detectives to come in. They did. Nolan also asked for permission to return to the rec center because he knew something wasn’t adding up.
Kane had a bunch of stolen credit cards. He had a motel room with a live victim in it. What was the real reason he broke into the rec center? Nolan went back with Tim.
He searched the area where he found Kane. He found some car keys. Samantha told Lucy that he has a black SUV. He bought it when they got to LA. He got it because he apparently found a new soulmate. He grabbed another girl. They found her student badge at the rec center. Her name is Julie Reed. She was spending time at a friend’s house.
Her parents were divorced. She’s been going back and forth between the two places. They didn’t realize she was missing until four in the morning. Now, Kane was refusing to talk unless he spoke with Samantha. The cops said no because they didn’t want him to retraumatize the girl.
Kane then pointed out how would Samantha feel if she hears she could’ve saved someone and didn’t. Kane told them to tell Samantha that he put Julie near the red place. The cops outside of Samantha were discussing it when she overheard them.
The “Red Place” was a phrase used to break Samantha. She tried to kill herself after hearing it. The cops stopped her in time and they got her medical attention, but she wanted to die and it technically didn’t matter that they found Julie on their own. Nolan found her.
They used math as well as surveillance cameras to determine which direction he took as he headed back to the rec center. Nolan then found the car in a parking lot with a bleeding Julie in the trunk. She was taken to the hospital. They nearly lost her during surgery and were lucky when they got her back.
With both girls surviving, Kane was facing life imprisonment. That is if he didn’t get transported back to wherever he kidnapped Samantha from. They might still have the death penalty there. Miles in the meantime got through to Seth. Seth was still wallowing in self-pity because no one could tell what the truth was with him.
They wouldn’t bother listening to his apologies either. His own father hung up on him and so Miles told him they had a right to what they were feeling. He betrayed their trust. He needed to keep working on himself if he wanted more going further. So, Miles agreed to be his life coach there to help.
Lucy also noticed that she needed to unpack and she promised to get it tomorrow because she had a long day.
And a certain ADA forgot his wedding anniversary, but Detective Lopez remembered before he did so she was going to milk this for a while.
THE END!
