Lamar Odom’s doctors aren’t sure if he’ll ever walk or talk again after suffering a dozen strokes. Odom may need a kidney transplant – he remains on dialysis after experiencing kidney failure – can devoted wife Khloe Kardashian rescue her husband?
After numerous scans of Lamar’s brain doctors found the strokes – which may have caused damage to the former NBA player’s motor skills. At this time medical professionals treating Odom cannot be certain to what extent the strokes had on Lamar’s ability to speak and walk normally again.
They also aren’t sure if this is permanent damage or if therapy will help to restore some or all of Lamar’s speech and capability to walk without assistance.
But the biggest problem Lamar Odom faces right now is kidney failure – he receives as much as six hours of dialysis daily. Doctors are monitoring the extent of the damage to Lamar’s kidney function to determine if he faces a lifetime of dialysis treatment or if he will need a kidney transplant. At this point dialysis is merely a temporary solution.
Many reports have said that Lamar has been talking already. He allegedly has told Khloe Kardashian he will never use drugs or alcohol again and thanked her for calling off their divorce. In the first reports on Odom’s condition as he came out of his coma were that his first words were directed at Khloe Kardashian and he said “Hey baby.”
Khloe Kardashian has remained at by Lamar’s side ever since her husband was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles from the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.
But there is good news – none of Lamar’s other organs were damaged. A statement released on Tuesday, October 20 by the Odom family read, “[Lamar] continues to make miraculous progress, taking a few steps in Los Angeles. We couldn’t be more overjoyed!” Odom’s aunt JaNeen Mercer thanked the doctors and nurses who cared for her nephew at the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas and asked supporters to keep praying for Lamar.
Lamar Odom faces a long road to recovery together. There is no way to know for certain how many months – or years – of therapy Lamar will need. There is no guarantee Lamar will ever be able to speak normally or walk without assistance again. And speculation is that Lamar Odom will never regain the physical abilities he had as a professional athlete. Will Khloe Kardashian be able to get her husband back to reasonable health?
