General Hospital (GH) spoilers show that ABC’s lone soap racked up a year of stellar performances. Although there were several actresses who hit it out of the park, we’ve singled out four performers for special recognition. Which of these four ladies do you think hit a homerun?
Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) proved that a throwback character can still be fresh and vibrant when given a hot storyline. She’s in the middle of the Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) story, and as such has been given great material to work with. Throughout 2016 she’s emoted all across Port Charles with a wide range of characters.
Devane showed that she can be sensitive and humorous when she’s with her granddaughter (Brooklyn Rae Silzer), and then flip a switch into righteous indignation when she’s up against Val.
Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) comes in a close second for her always energetic displays of raw emotion coupled with garrulous diatribe. Can anyone else go from haughty anger to teary heaving sobs in 2.7 seconds? Grahn portrays Davis as a sheer force of nature, and throws herself into performing with an unmatched gusto.
This year she showcased the perfect blend of confusion and compassion as she dealt with revelations about her co-ed daughter’s (Lexi Ainsley) sexuality. She also managed to make her scenes as a conflicted do-good attorney/mob wife believable.
Let’s not forget about Michelle Stafford’s portrayal of unhinged Nina Clay. Every soap has to have a good crazy on the screen, and Stafford has a history of playing crazy good (you remember Phyllis Newman, right?).
Like Hughes, Stafford has been featured heavily in the Valentin storyline. But Stafford’s vixen is riveting for entirely different reasons. GH viewers mostly got a bland version of the former bad girl this year, but now Stafford is showcasing her skills as an actress who can play nutso without going over the acting edge.
She has a glacial stare that speaks volumes and the calm, measured tone she uses to deliver threats is downright scary! Let’s hope she doesn’t dig her claws into poor, innocent Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez)!
So that leaves us with a breakout performance by Rebecca Budig in the role of Hayden Barnes. Budig is best known for her role as the exuberant Greenlee on the now cancelled, All My Children. On GH Budig has done an acting 180 and shown us a morose, dark characterization of a victim who victimizes others.
Remember when she spent her days and nights blackmailing Nikolas Cassadine into an unhealthy relationship? But that was then and this is now, and Budig has been given the opportunity to play dead and play good girl. Admit it, her deathbed twitching was gruesome and awesomely realistic!
