Prince Charles has been busy on a mission to show his mother Queen Elizabeth that he is ready to take over the reins and reign over the United Kingdom of Great Britain; now he has taken that mission to the streets. After all, he has be prepared to show his mum that he can ascend above the immense popularity of his son and his lovely daughter in law the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton. What better way to do that then by paying a visit to the local radio stations is probably what “King” Prince Charles thought, or at least that is what his wife convinced him before guzzling down a glass of scotch.
The visit to Global Radio London today was fraught with opportunities for interpersonal communication between Prince Charles and his future subjects. For him and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker-Bowles, there was an abundance of photo ops for both to look attentively regal as they learned about what the commoners do working at the radio station. One of the few shots of Camilla alone was of her spinning records ala DJ mode on the turn tables. Honestly, the visit as seen through photos looks like it went very well for King Prince Charles. Well, looks can be deceiving. You see, Prince Charles went and opened his mouth during the visit. He should have stuck with having his picture taken in my opinion.
The man is just out of touch with popular culture. First off, when he met up with former Spice Girl Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton who is now co-hosting Heart Breakfast on Heart London radio, he asked her when the Spice Girls were going to reunite. (Can you just imagine how that conversation must have gone? Emma, “Now tell me what you want, what you really really want.” Prince Charles, “I tell you what I want, what I really really want. I want a, want a, want a Spice Girls reunion.”) Too bad the Prince hasn’t made more efforts to become closer with his daughter in law Kate Middleton instead of making decisions for her like what music to play at her wedding. If so, he may have gotten the inside scoop that a full Spice Girls reunion will never happen, as Kate has forged a friendship with Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham. Posh is said to be completely against the idea of a Spice Girls reunion.
A forgivable faux pas, as the comment at least made it appear as though Prince Charles knew something about popular culture and music. Then lo and behold the Prince asked a DJ what music he was playing on air at the time, and the DJ told him it was Christina Aguilera. Prince Charles’ blank face and lack of response evoked to the imagination the sounds of crickets chirping. Clearly the Prince doesn’t keep up with the times. Christina Aguilera’s song “Beautiful” was named as the most empowering song of the decade by the UK’s LGBT rights organization Stonewall in 2011. This charity is one of the largest, if not the largest of organizations for gay equality as a human rights issue in the UK and Europe. Yeah.
Where Prince Charles has indeed been making some positive strides towards his aim of succeeding his mother to the throne, he clearly has some more homework to do. Not knowing who Christina Aguilera was is pretty bad given her stardom and association with television show “The Voice.” It becomes inexcusable considering that Christina Aguilera’s signature song is revered by a large percentage of the populace Prince Charles wishes to devote his life in service to. It is hard to be of service when you are out of touch with the hearts and mind of the people.
