Spina Bifida is a birth defect where the spine has gaps in it, and the spinal cord is exposed. This condition can cause the child to be confined to a bed or a wheelchair for life. Disabilities the child faces range from minor issues to severe developmental disorders.

Surgery In The Womb Offers Hope
General Hospital’s Sonny and Carly will learn that a surgery called meningocele repair is a possibility for their child and could help to increase the baby’s chances of survival and a semi-normal life. Spina bifida can cause several issues that affect normal everyday life, even issues with bodily functions, but the repair surgery offers some hope.
The surgery repairs the hole exposing the spinal cord and has promising effects if done prenatal as opposed to after birth. Closing the spinal cord as soon as possible can possible prevent cognitive defects in the child because it does not allow the brain to shift, causing fluid to gather in the skull and other often problems.
