On the last episode after months of being holed up inside his compound, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) enlisted the help of Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) in plotting his revenge against the Guerrera werewolves, and vowed to take down anyone who posed a threat to baby Hope’s existence. Elijah watched helplessly as Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) spiraled downward while mourning the loss of her daughter and struggling to adapt to her new hybrid status. Exiled by the Guerrera werewolves, who now controlled the French Quarter, Marcel was still reeling over the destruction of his vampire family, and attempted to rebuild his home with the help of Josh (guest star Steven Krueger). Elsewhere, Cami (Leah Pipes), who was attempting to regain some normalcy in her life, seek comfort in a surprising place. Last, Davina (Danielle Campbell) continued her plan to use Mikael (guest star Sebastian Roche) against Klaus, but got sidetracked when she met the mysterious, yet charming Kaleb (guest star Daniel Sharman), who held a few secrets of his own. Horses run from a fire in Cadiz, Spain in 1702. Elijah and Klaus come into a building calling for their brother Kol. They see bodies everywhere and Elijah complains that debauchery like this will lead their father straight to them. Kol says there’s always time for games. Elijah says they must leave because Mikael is almost upon them. Kol says if that was true, Klaus would be dead.

He says Klaus should flee so Mikael will follow him and leave him alone. Elijah says Rebekah and Finn are already on the ship. Kol says Rebekah does what Klaus says because she’s terrified of him and Finn has a dagger in his chest. Kol says a day will come when he doesn’t have to obey Klaus and his older brother tells him – today is not that day – as he slides a stake into his chest.

In New Orleans, now, Kol strolls the streets of the city in his new body and causes mischief as he goes. He upends a fruit cart then watches Davina as she walks out of a shop. Elijah finds a body by the fountain in the courtyard and goes to look at it. It’s a blond woman and a trail of bloody footprints leads away from it. He follows it up to Hayley soaking in a tub. There’s another dead body there.

He asks if she wants him to remove her leftovers. She stands up naked and soapy before him and he tosses her a towel. She says she’s a hybrid now and has a werewolf temper to go with her appetite. She says the dead witches were ones that kidnapped and threatened her baby. She tells Elijah it’s no worse than anything Klaus has done and he tells her that’s a pretty low yardstick to measure herself by.

He goes to see Klaus who explains that he went to ask the witches to use a locator spell to find the white oak stake and when they couldn’t, he let Hayley have them. Elijah says she’s growing too savage and Klaus says he’s judging her too harshly and he’s hurting her. He says being a vampire brings out who you are. Klaus says when she was covered with witch’s blood, she was smiling. He says she’s just fine and Elijah says that’s not good enough.

He wants to take her to the bayou to try and find some of her people and regain some of her humanity. Marcel tells his new followers that Gia will be the first turned since she has proven herself. He says he others need to prove themselves. He describes what it’s like to be a vampire when Elijah walks up. Marcel tells them that some folks aren’t a good match to be a vampire because it brings out the worst in them.

We see Elijah teaching a young Marcel to play the piano and telling him not to give up. Klaus comes in and mocks them and says he likes to see them getting along like peas in a pod. Elijah sends the boy upstairs to study Hamlet and asks Klaus why he’s drinking. Klaus says Rebekah is pouting over the governor’s son and he’s monopolizing Marcel with his schooling.

Klaus says if only there was someone to indulge in roguery with him and Elijah is annoyed. Out in the courtyard, the brothers find a pile of bodies and Kol who says this is a start to apologizing for keeping him in a box. Back to the present and Marcel telling Elijah he’s surprised to see him on this side of the river and Elijah saying he’s surprised to see Marcel is building another vampire community.

Marcel says his community was fine until Klaus’ moonlight ring idea. He says the quarter is a dangerous place and Elijah is the last true vampire left. Elijah says he has an offer for him. He says to find the white oak stake and give it to him and he’ll let him continue his little social experiment. He says otherwise, he’ll talk to Davina and it might not go well.

Marcel tells him to stay away from her and Elijah says he knew he could count on him. Mikael complains to Davina about the time it’s taking. He offers to help and she says she can’t trust him and says he may try to trick her into performing a spell that will allow him out of her control. Kaleb texts her for coffee and she leaves Mikael stewing.

She leaves and Kol checks out the room. He reports back to his mother and brother that Davina has something super secret in the attic that she’s locked with a very complex spell. She says they need to know what she has – she wonders if it’s a weapon – and also wants to know what side she’s on. She tells Kol to take her for dinner and he reminds them he just stood her up for coffee.

Finn and Kol argue and she tells them to save it for the upcoming conflict. He graveyard is full of wolves waiting on her that all want moonlight rings. Cassie says the witches are hard at work and soon they’ll have enough rings for an army and then they’ll pay their brothers a visit. She says they will teach them the unfortunate error of their vampire ways.

In the bayou, Klaus and Hayley come to the old pack campsite. He says they are nearby. She says they hate hybrids and he says they hate not having power and says they need to ally her wolves to them before Cassie gets to them. He tells her to use her new hybrid sense. She tries but gets nothing. He tells her that her people need their queen.

She says she’s a mess and can only think about feeding and missing their daughter. She asks if he’s thought about her once and he says he thinks about her constantly and what he will do to those that harm her. She spots a jacket and gives it a sniff. He tells her to concentrate. She does and heads off in another direction.

Marcel finds Elijah and says Davina is on the way and says he needs to leave because she won’t cooperate with him there. He tells Elijah to stay out of sight and try not to kill anyone. Elijah watches a chess game played by a couple of old men and thinks back to Kol and Klaus playing chess. He chastises them for wiping out an entire tenement. He says it was 46 bodies and Kol says it’s closer to 60 and that they must not have checked the attic.

Klaus complains he’s spending too much time with Elijah and Elijah says he needs to send the boy away because he’s not safe with Kol around. Klaus says he will put Kol back in a box if he needs to. Kol is angry and Klaus tells Elijah clearly that Marcel stays. Davina and Marcel meet and he asks about school. She says she met a cute guy but then he stood her up.

Marcel tells her he needs a locator spell to find a white oak stake. She asks if someone put him up to it. He says if he uses it on Klaus, everyone in their line will die. She says she can’t risk Elijah or Klaus having it since they’re both brutal, sadistic monsters. Elijah says that’s true and tells her he wants to protect his family and she wants to protect her friends. Davina says no.

She says they had power and manipulated and killed everyone. She says it’s their turn to be afraid. Marcel asks why he’s there and Elijah says he needed to look her in the face. He says she didn’t seem concerned about Marcel’s safety even though she cares about him and Elijah says the reason for that is because she’s had it all along.

Klaus and Hayley spot Ollie and the others. She says Ollie is acting like Alpha and Jackson is nowhere to be seen. He tells her to go talk to them. They walk in an Ollie asks what the hell they want. Hayley says their pack is divided by someone who wants them to be slaves. She says they need someone strong enough to protect them. Ollie says she’s not even a wolf anymore.

She threatens him and he tells her the others would rather follow a witch than her. Ollie says he’d rather die than follow her and Klaus knocks him down and prepares to kill him. She demands that he let him go and says he’s family. He tells them she’s powerful and, like a queen, merciful. He tells her that they need to fear her more. He leaves her and says he has to go remind that witch what she can and cannot do in his city.

Marcel tells Elijah that Davina won’t use the white oak stake on Klaus because it will kill him too and Elijah agrees but says there’s nothing stopping her from using it on me. Marcel laughs and tells him he needs to behave. Elijah asks what if it falls into enemy hands. Marcel says he can get it back but it will take time. Elijah says he can make Davina comply. Marcel says he wonders how he survived them because they always make stupid moves.

We see Kol and Marcel back in the day watching a troupe of actors do Hamlet but actually running each other through with swords. Elijah comes in and asks what he’s done. He asks Kol if there is no limit to his vile imagination. Kol says if the boy will become a vampire, he must learn. He says he’s already given Marcel his blood and all he needs to do is snuff him out.

Elijah chokes Kol and Klaus tells him to stop. Kol tells Elijah that at least Klaus knows the meaning of family. Klaus says he does and that Marcel is family then stakes his brother to put him back in his box. Now, Elijah says he doesn’t fault Marcel or Davina but says it doesn’t help his dilemma. Mikael tells Davina she’s foolish for imprisoning him and letting the hybrid monster roam the city.

Kaleb texts Davina and asks to make it up to her over dinner. Klaus is in the foggy cemetery and calls out to be greeted. A bunch of wolves come out to surround him. He says that’s more like it and says it’s a shame to see they’ve been neutered by a 16 year old girl. He calls for the witch who dares to make moonlight rings without his permission. Cassie walks out, calls him Niklaus and says she’s been expecting him.

Cassie takes him into a crypt and offers him condolences on the loss of his child. He asks if her offer of tea is meant to be a gesture. He asks why she’s making moonlight rings and she says an alliance between the wolves and the witches brings balance to their home. She says vampires are a plague made flesh. She says he has no humanity and punishes those who do. She says witches have a coven and wolves a pack and that’s why he hates them.

She says the rings level the playing field. She says united, nothing can stand against them. He tells her it’s an ambitious strategy. He tells her NO is a vicious place and says enemies are everywhere, behind your back and before your eyes. He says those who seek to destroy her you may never see coming. She says she takes precautions and is taking them as we speak.

Kaleb and Davina sit at dinner and he asks about her family. She says she was an only child. He says his mom was a control freak and the reason he stopped practicing magic for so long. She asks if he’s a witch and he says they are kindred souls. He says he knows she’s the Harvest Girl who told them all to shove it. He says he doesn’t really believe in authority.

She gets a call and takes it but says she’ll make it quick. Finn/Vincent creeps up on Kaleb/Kol and tells him to stop stalling. Kol says he’s wooing her. Finn says the best way to find a weapon is to provoke her to use it. It’s Marcel who tells her that anyone that wants to kill an Original will be coming for her once they know she has the stake. She tells him where she is and Marcel, with Elijah, speed toward her.

The restaurant is full of wolves when she comes back and she knocks one down with the power of her magic but can’t take them all. She touches her bracelet and says an incantation and Mikael comes to her call. He calls them all filthy dogs and attacks them. He makes quick work of them but one knocks the bracelet off her arm and Mikael says that’s an interesting turn of events.

Kol cowers behind a counter at the sight of dear old dad! Elijah and Marcel arrive in time to see Mikael lifting her up and preparing to feed on her. Elijah throws her off of him and Mikael says they have unfinished business. Elijah comes for him and they grapple. Marcel shows up and tries to take Davina out of there but she says to get her bracelet.

He tosses it to her. She commands Mikael to stop and he does, just shy of stabbing her. She tells him to go and he takes the white oak stake and beats it. Kol pops his head up from behind the counter but, of course, Elijah doesn’t recognize his brother in his new body. He asks if he has something to say and he says – not a bloody thing – in his thick brogue.

Klaus drinks tea with the witch and says it’s the same tea his mother made and he loathed it. He tells Cassie his mother was insane and says she believed they were abominations, cursed to walk the earth. He says she was the real monster for turning them to vampires and condemning them to an eternity of blood lust and then treating them badly because of it. She asks if he’s building to a question.

He asks if his mother speaks to her and she says he knows what his mother would say – she breaks into another accent and says – go to your room before being so rude. He goes for her and the wolves get ready to pounce. Cassie tells him he shouldn’t kill those he hopes to rule someday and says there is no need for bloodshed – she says they can resume this conversation another day.

She says – goodnight Niklaus – and tells him they’ll speak again soon. Klaus comes home and tells Elijah it’s worse than he thought. He says Cassie is not just guided by their mother, he says she is our mother. Klaus says he’ll kill her and boil her bones to make sure she doesn’t come back. Elijah breaks the news to him that Mikael is back, under Davina’s spell and has the white oak stake.

Elijah says if Davina releases him, they’re in trouble. Klaus asks Elijah the only question to consider is which of their parents they kill first. Hayley shows back up to the compound with some wolves. Klaus asks if they’re running a kennel. She says she’s stepping up and says if they’re not with him, they’re with the witches. Back in the day, Elijah tells a dead looking Kol that Marcel is good for Klaus and says his wretched behavior is not what Klaus needs.

Elijah says even he may have to make sacrifices to preserve the bond between Klaus and Marcel. We see Marcel come to Klaus with excitement about a new verse he’s memorized. Klaus is dismissive and Elijah interrupts and tells Klaus to remove the little beggar and says he’s become a bother. Klaus protects the boy from Elijah’s faux contempt.

Now, Klaus asks where Oliver is and Hayley says he’s spying on Cassie for them and will report back. Elijah is headed out and tells Hayley the presence of all the wolves is a bit much for her but says she should be with her kind. He leaves. She watches him go. Kol knocks Finn into the wall and asks what the hell and says the wolves almost killed him.

Cassie is there and she says she was the one that gave the order. She says the attack had to look real and says now Davina is indebted to him and will seek him out. Kol says he’s had it and says if this is the new life she has planned for him, he doesn’t want it. She brings him to his news with magic and reminds him it’s only by her grace that he’s there.

Cassie pats his bloody face and says Finn was in the attack during the attack. He says the door was open and the room was empty. Cassie says Davina had to have the weapon with her to defeat the wolves. She asks what dark weapon Davina has. Kol looks his mum in the eye and lies to her – he says he was knocked out during the attack.

Marcel watches Gia play violin. Elijah walks up beside him. Marcel says to let me guess and says Davina is nowhere to be found. Elijah says no doubt she’s hidden away with Mikael to nurse his wounds. Marcel tells Elijah to get in line of the people who are threatening him. He says the wolves and witches all want to kill him. Marcel says he knows Klaus is on team wolf.

He asks what side Elijah is on. Elijah says he’s not a joiner. Elijah offers him to join their new vamp community and says they’re all he’s got. Elijah asks why he should become their benefactor. He snaps Gia’s neck and tells Elijah when she wakes up, she’s going to need a mentor. Marcel says – I hope you do better with her than you did with me. Of course, Marcel doesn’t remember all that Elijah did for him way back in the day.

THE END!
