Tonight on NBC the Emmy award winning music competition The Voice returns with an all new Tuesday May 11, season 8 episode 23 called, “Live Semi-Final Performances” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, the semifinal round opens with the top 5 artists performing.
On the last episode of The Voice, America voted to eliminate one artist and the remaining five continued in the competition. Did you watch the last episode? If you missed it, we have a full and detailed recap right here for you.
On tonight’s episode per the NBC synopsis “the top five artists Sawyer Fredericks, Meghan Linsey, Joshua Davis, Koryn Hawthorne, and India Carney perform live in front of coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams for America’s votes.”

#TheVoiceLive will feature two songs tonight for each singer – one is a coach’s pick and another the artist’s choice and they also take a trip home. But first, Nate Ruess, lead singer of F.U.N. and a former The Voice mentor.

Comments: Blake says that reminds him of when he first heard Joshua sing and says it sounds like it’s around the campfire and his softer side. Christina says it reminds her of a soothing lullaby and says she truly loved it. Pharrell says he made it his own and says Joshua really knows how to use his voice. Adam says the challenge has been to highlight what he does best and says not trying to compete very dramatic, giant vocalists that are competing with him. He says this did exactly that and he’s proud of him.

Koryn Hawthorne – Team Pharrell

Comments: Adam says it was awesome and applauds her. Pharrell is on his feet. Adam says that song has had such a cool long life with U2 then other artists. He says he’s happy it was in her good hands tonight. Christina says she loves her and has seen her grow leaps and bounds since the beginning and says being on Pharrell’s team has helped her grow and blossom even more. She says she’s very consistent especially given how young she is. Pharrell says she has learned a lot but says he’s learned way more from her. He begs everyone to vote for her and keep her in this.

Comments: Pharrell says it was a great performance and says two things strike him. He says he knows she’s been trying to tell people what’s inside her and says what she did will inspire other aspiring artists. He says she reminds people there are other sounds and characters of music that live in Nashville. Adam says she’s been growing consistently and says you can’t teach people how to connect to a song like she does. He says she always sings like it’s her last and says she’s very committed to the moment and it was a great job. Blake says he gets so excited when she’s about to perform because it’s always great when she gets up there. He says his favorite thing is that it’s like she came from a different time and is so vintage in what she brings to current music. He says he’s so glad he got to be her coach.

Comments: Adam says she has so much ability and talks about how she let it build from the beginning. He says she has incredible taste and says it was really amazing and says he loves the song. Blake says he can’t say enough about how powerful that was and says when she got soft at the end, that was the most powerful part of it and something he’s not used to hearing her do on the show. He says it showcases another part of her artistry and says he’ll be shocked if she’s not in the finals. Christina says she continues to amaze her and says she has tenderness and passion and is also smart enough to have control and says she’s a smart singer and knows how to push and pull. She says she can’t wait to but it on iTunes and says it brought her to an emotional place.

Comments: Adam says every time he runs out things to say about him he finds more. He says that’s a song that’s rooted in heavy things from back in the day and says they all know it and he did it justice. Adam says he’s a fan. Blake says it’s getting boring and Adam says he bores him and he’s a boring guy, blah, blah. Blake can’t talk because Adam won’t shut up and just says – great job. Pharrell says he has to gauge his performance on how he makes people feel then asks how the crowd liked it. They cheer wildly and Pharrell says it’s his time.

The cast of Pitch Perfect 2 is there and enjoys a round of applause. Then we see Joshua head back home for a visit with his family. He goes to Traverse City, Michigan and visits with his friends, family and people from his former band. He also gets a parade in his honor and says it’s overwhelming. He then performs at the State Theatre. He says he’s performed for crowds for just 12 people so it’s excitign to perform for a sell out crowd in his hometown.

Song: When I Paint my Masterpiece by The Band
Comments: Blake says he didn’t know that song but says he’s glad he does songs that he doesn’t know because then it’s his version that he knows. He says Joshua connects with lyrics with a different way and it’s clear that he’s a writer. Christina says she’s such a fan of his and loved seeing him having fun in his hometown. She says Nate is great on the drums too. She says great job. Adam says that was even better than he thought it was going to be. Adam tells Blake the name of the group is The Band and Blake says he just heard the band play and Adam calls him an idiot. Adam says it was so good and says they’re doing the right stuff and he’s proud of him.

Koryn Hawthorne heads back to her high school in Abbeville, Louisiana and Kelly Clarkson leaves her a video message wishing her luck. Koryn sings Stronger for the school and they throw a parade for her. She meets the Mayor and gets the key to the city. She also gets a message from Pharrell. Her dad says she’s bringing a lot of positivity to their city and she does an outdoor concert.

Comments: Adam says he has one thing to stay before her fans go crazy and says from where she started to where she is now, never has he seen such a drastic journey on The Voice. Christina says she’s so scared of what she will become years from now. She says she makes people feel things and can’t believe how young she is and doing what she is. She says her hometown support was also amazing. She says she’s such a fan. Pharell says he knows that someone that watched was told no today but now knows the impossible is just a word and dreams can come true. He says she showed why everyone should vote.

Meghan Linsey heads to the city that shaped her as an artist – Nashville, Tennessee. She’s excited to see her family, boyfriend and dogs. She even got an in-person visit from Naomi Judd, her mentor. Naomi says Meghan was born to sing and she knows she’s going to win The Voice. She says it was amazing to see everyone and she does a TV interview and plays a show at The Wild Horse. Big and Rich come to the show to perform with her. They met her a long time ago and have performed with her many times.

Comments: Christina says that was awesome and says she always amazes her with her vocals. She calls her a showstopper and says she can do it all. She congratulates her. Pharrell says once again she was just give people a good curation of what she is as an artist. He says she proves it every time and says her voice just harnesses it. He says she has proved everyone wrong that denied her. Blake says he can barely contain himself and says that was so special and says she engaged all the country music fans on top of all her other fans. He says it was by far her most important performance on the show so far. He says he can’t wait to see how it does on iTunes.

India Carney heads to her hometown of LAX and is startled by her a capella group at the airport on her way. She then heads to New York and goes to her grandma’s house in Queens. She gets a warm greeting from her family. Next she goes to appear on New York Live. She also goes to the Manhattan School of Music to do a little concert and says the school has supported her since she was 10. She gets a supportive video message from Christina then goes to Yankee Stadium to sing the national anthem.

Comments: Pharrell says that looked, felt and sounded beautiful and says every artist wants to feel like what she just did on stage. Adam says every performance of hers is awesome and are like performance art. He says it’s cool and starts off chill then gets angry, sad and crazy. He says he loves watching her perform. Christina says that’s what she’s about and says she likes to watch a storybook unfold. She says India embodies that and brings it all to life for her. Cute little Sawyer Fredericks journeys back to his hometown in Fultonville, New York. He says it’s a quiet town that’s mostly farm land. He sees a big welcome home sign and hops out to hug his family. His dad is so happy to see his son pursuing his dreams. Saywer suits up and goes to help out with the animals on the farm. Then he goes to the Fonda Speedway to meet fans. There’s a parade in his honor and 10,000 people show up – he says that’s ten times the town’s population. The Mayor gives him the key to the community and names today his day. He sings to the crowd of adoring fans.

Comments: Adam says in is ongoing quest to find things to say to him, he says he’ll focus on one part of his voice and says there’s something special about when he hits those high notes that are powerful the room just booms. Blake says he was going to say that. Blake says he’s clearly the front runner and there’s no question in anyone’s mind that he’s the real deal. He congratulates him. Pharrell says there’s a power to what he does and says it’s something he access when he sings and calls him generous when he sings. He says he needs to move forward to next week.
